Have you ever experienced something in your life for which you were profoundly grateful?
I’ve experienced many such moments, but the ones that stand out the very most are when I held my new born children for the very first time. For instance, when my oldest daughter was born, the doctor handed her to me and I in turn placed her on my wife’s breast. Although I’ve held and later hugged her for untold hours since, that first moment remains a highlight of my life. As I accepted her into my arms for the very first time I felt like I had just received the greatest possible gift I could ever receive in my life. And indeed the only thing to rival it was when I held my second daughter for the first time.
In both cases I felt such a profound sense of gratitude that I wept for joy. The gratitude poured out of me in nearly uncontrollable waves of thanks and happiness. That feeling of gratitude stayed with me for days afterward and it colored—and indeed shaped—my experiences at the hospital and at home. I felt grateful for so many other things as well.
Not just gratitude for my wife’s health after the delivery, or the home we brought my children back to, but also for little things as well. In fact, I still recall when my second daughter was born. We had her in her car seat and we were leaving the hospital parking lot. This required driving through a roundabout circle to reach the main road. As we approached the roundabout another car arrived just ahead of us. The driver stopped and waved us through, insisting we go first. This seemingly simple act brought another tear to my eye.
Was I still weepy over my daughter’s birth? Sure. But my point is that wonderful things large and small seemed to be happening for us as I held that sense of gratitude. And if I concentrate on feeling a similar sense of gratitude for my life now, similar positive events seem to happen. It’s not necessarily winning the lottery, but it could be catching green lights all the way to work, or having a neighbor come by and offer to fix the fence since he’s doing his own.
